A new year begets new hope, opportunities, dreams and goals. At Clarity in Action Ministries, we are seeing lives changed. Here’s what we’ve witnessed:
After one of our public meetings, a middle-aged man asked for a hug. “You have made a bigger impact on our marriage than anyone by helping our adult daughter.” As a result of balanced Biblical truths, this husband and father was able to see and change his own sinful relational patterns. He shared reflections of past failures to communicate with his wife as a life-partner and his neglect of her preferences, strengths, and abilities as a complement to their life and marriage. Looking at himself (and her) differently breathed life into their relationship.
Another man shared, “All my life I’ve only heard half of God’s image. Thank you for providing a different perspective.”
One man learned the value of hearing from God through his wife and her relationship with the Lord. Clarity in Action played a small role in their journey, which included marital interruption for a time as a result of his failure to yield to the Word and Person of God.
Change is occurring in circles where individuals, both husbands and wives, live miserably as a result of wanting to please the Lord. A focus on what to do and how to do it (as a husband or wife) leads to sinful patterns of death. On the other hand, a loving relationship where the Lord is put first results in love for one another and brings life. We miss the mark when we fail to view believers, even our spouses, as image bearers and joint heirs.
The Word of God does not change. God does not change. Unfortunately, many of us who love God and His Word value roles and responsibilities more than fellowship with Jesus Christ. This focus on doing rather than being impacts our churches, marriages and homes. Women and children who experience rules, harshness and neglect in the name of Jesus do not always turn to the local church in times of trouble. They hide and run because they know the consequences of breaking rules and regulations based on a hierarchy of roles.
We want to stress that most of what is said and taught from pulpits and biblical resources is not wrong; it’s right. It comes directly from the Word of God. However, it is often incomplete and imbalanced, especially as it relates to marriage.
Those of us who provide Light in the Darkness Training have invested hours in prayer and studying Scripture, working together to create a 5-hour curriculum. We don’t neglect Ephesians 5, but we begin with chapter 1 and apply it sequentially. We consider 1 Corinthians 1-6 as a precedent to a dialogue on marriage. We take into account Paul’s warning to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20 and the book of Jude.
We are seeing change and it begins with love:
Do not owe anyone anything, except to love one another, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, Do not commit adultery; Do not murder; Do not steal; Do not covet; and any other commandment, are summed up by this commandment: Love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no wrong to a neighbor. Love, therefore, is the fulfillment of the law. (Romans 13:8-11)
