Group Training Event
Light in the Darkness
One in three women in the church experience physical abuse by an intimate partner. Do you know who they are? Do you know what to do? Are you willing to learn? Light in the Darkness Training provides a biblical understanding of dominating vs. normal sin patterns in marriage. This training is provided as an extension of Clarity in Action Ministries which exists to equip the local church in a Christ honoring way. We use the Word of God to cultivate awareness of, and wise responses to, domestic abuse.
This training is designed for congregations and churches. It may also be used by church leaders/small group leaders prior to a marriage conference to give them tools to discern normal conflict and marriage issues vs. oppressive ones.
Group Training Session
We ask a donation of $25/person plus travel costs for our team from the Iowa City, Iowa area.
This training is available via zoom if travel costs and/or time are prohibitive.
I went to church for years, being abused at home and desperately searching for something that made sense, that would help me understand what was happening and give me enough courage to stand up and change my circumstances. I am responsible for my actions and I know pride kept me from saying anything publicly, but it was also the fact that my church never said anything about abuse. I felt like I was hiding a dirty little secret that only happened to non-Christians. I felt such shame. I had made my bed, now I had to sleep in it.
I felt like nobody would understand and I was on my own.

Pastor’s Perspective
Mike’s talk was fantastic and really set the stage for the rest of the day. Some of the advice Sydney gave goes against the way I naturally think. So it was very helpful to hear.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the speaker(s) for Light in the Darkness Training?
Currently, the speakers are Sydney Millage and Pastor Floyd Yutzy. Pastor Mike Gittins is also one of our presenters.
What is the goal of Light in the Darkness Training?
The goal is to shine the light of God’s Word and dispel darkness. We desire to help local churches see blind spots in their theology and practice that excuse, minimize, or cover marital oppression. The book of John says, “And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” (John 3:19-21 ESV)
Where does Light in the Darkness Training take place?
We will come to you in person or we will provide the training online via zoom.
What is the cost for Light in the Darkness Training?
$25/ person and travel costs. Please fill out this form and we will contact you with more information.
How long is the training?
We provide 6 sessions that vary in length (from 25 to 90 minutes) for a total of 5 hours of direct instruction. We also recommend a couple of breaks, perhaps even a meal in between, but we leave that up to the host.
What are the host's responsibilities?
We ask hosts to promote the event, collect donations, provide the schedule, venue, and lodging for speakers (as needed).
Clarity in Action will bring a book table, display, promotional items, class notes, and speakers.
Who sets the schedule?
The host determines the schedule that works best for their people and venue. We will be as flexible as possible.
What day(s) work best?
Traditionally we provide training on Saturdays, but we could provide a Friday night/Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Our presenters include pastors of local churches, which is their priority.
Who is responsible for promoting the training?
We leave that up to the host. You can determine if it’s best for leadership (i.e. in preparation for an upcoming marriage event), if you want to invite the whole congregation or work with other local churches. Some have even invited people helpers from the community at large.
How do I contact someone to schedule Light in the Darkness Training?
Use this form to request information and schedule a time.
What ages do you recommend for this training?
We do not recommend this training for minors. If you would like help with youth or children, please mention that in your request.
